The Bristol East MP - who is the foreign affairs representative for the Labour Party - has been tweeting from the court where the three Pussy Riot punk rockers are accused of hooliganism.
The feminist Russian punk band face jail for storming the altar of Moscow's main cathedral and belting out a "punk prayer" calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Vladimir Putin, who is now president.
A Russian state prosecutor has asked the court to impose three-year jail sentences on Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29.
She has been posting updates on Twitter, where a Tory Newcastle councillor wrote: "@kerrymp was elected to represent people of Bristol East. I'm sure they're impressed with her current obsession abroad."
Ms McCarthy responded: "I'm a shadow foreign office minister, it's part of the job, back in Bristol tonight and for rest of recess."
Ms McCarthy told The Post today that she was funding the trip herself and was only away for 48 hours.
She added: "I am not having a holiday this summer. I have four full time members of staff in the constituency holding the fort, and have kept in contact, dealt with emails etc."
