Bristol City skipper Skuse makes no excuses after FA Cup exit

Bristol City captain Cole Skuse blamed "schoolboy" defending for his team's FA Cup exit at the hands of Blackburn Rovers.

Beaten 2-0 in an uninspiring third round tie at Ewood Park, City only had themselves to blame as their defensive frailties resurfaced.

Yet to keep a clean sheet all season, the visitors went behind to Danny Murphy's seventh minute strike and were effectively down and out when Grant Hanley added a second from a set-piece early in the second half.

Skuse admitted: "The way we are conceding goals is criminal and we are shooting ourselves in the foot and leaving ourselves with no chance. It is something we have to eliminate from our game.

"I think both goals could have been prevented at source. We've had another look at them and we feel they should have been stopped.

"We were still in the game at half-time, but to give away the second goal in the manner we did has killed us.

"To deal with the initial set-piece and then to concede from the second phase was really disappointing. The ball has been chipped back in, we've not stuck with our men and, all of a sudden we are 2-0 down.

"I felt Blackburn were comfortable at the end of the game."

Although manager Derek McInnes insisted he was taking the competition seriously and fielded his strongest available line-up, the Robins have now exited at the third round stage in each of the last six seasons.

Skuse acknowledged: "We have not had a decent Cup run in ages. We have not come here and played our under-19s, we've picked a side to progress to the next round.

"I know a club of our size and standing should be doing better. "But we're out of it and we have to take it and move on."
