Transcoding video is a pain. We know that about as well as anyone. Amazon feels that pain, and thankfully, it's got the servers to back it up. Ahead of today's earnings release, the retail giant is announcing the release of Elastic Transcoder, a service aimed at helping users convert their videos into different formats, with a number of presets available for mobile devices, web browsers and the like. Customers can also go ahead with their own presets, if they're so inclined, adjusting things like file size and bitrate. Elastic Transcoder makes it possible to process multiple videos and prioritizes files based on urgency. The pay-as-you-go service is currently available in a half-dozen areas, including the EU, US East and two in the US West and Asia Pacific. More info after the break.

Amazon Web Services Launches Amazon Elastic Transcoder

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ: AMZN), today announced Amazon Elastic Transcoder, a highly scalable service for transcoding video files between different digital media formats. For example, customers can use Amazon Elastic Transcoder to convert their large high resolution "master" video files into smaller versions that are optimized for playback on websites, mobile devices, connected TV's and other video platforms. Amazon Elastic Transcoder removes the need to manage infrastructure and transcoding software, providing scalability and performance by leveraging AWS services. The service manages all aspects of the transcoding process transparently and automatically. It also supports pre-defined transcoding presets that make it easy to transcode video for smartphones, tablets, web browsers and other devices. With Amazon Elastic Transcoder, customers can create enterprise, training, user-generated, broadcast, or other video content for their applications or websites. Customers can get started with Amazon Elastic Transcoder by visiting http://aws.amazon.com/elastictranscoder.

Traditionally, transcoding has been complex for customers in three significant ways. First, customers need to buy and manage transcoding software, which can be expensive and also requires substantial configuration and management. Second, audio and video settings for each device that the customer wants to support need to be created and tested. Often, this is a trial and error process, which can be wasteful as compute resources are used each time a new combination of settings is tried. Third, to accommodate peak workloads, customers need to provision the transcoding capacity appropriately. This can be expensive because most of the time the capacity is underutilized.

With Amazon Elastic Transcoder these complexities are eliminated. There is no need to buy, configure or manage the underlying transcoding software. In addition, Amazon Elastic Transcoder provides pre-defined presets for popular devices that remove the trial and error in finding the right settings and output formats for different devices. The service also supports custom presets (pre-defined settings made by the customer), making it easy for customers to create re-useable transcoding settings for their unique requirements such as a specific video size or bitrate. Finally, Amazon Elastic Transcoder automatically scales up and down to handle customers' workloads, eliminating wasted capacity and minimizing time spent waiting for jobs to complete. The service also enables customers to process multiple files in parallel and organize their transcoding workflow using a feature called transcoding pipelines. Using transcoding pipelines, customers can configure Amazon Elastic Transcoder to transcode their files when and how they want, so they can efficiently and seamlessly scale for spikey workloads. For example, a news organization may want to have a "high priority" transcoding pipeline for breaking news stories, or a User-Generated Content website may want to have separate pipelines for low, medium, and high resolution outputs to target different devices.

"Our customers told us that it was difficult and expensive to transcode video due to the explosion in the number of devices they need to support," said Charlie Bell, Vice President of Utility Computing Services. "They had to be both experts in the intricacies of video support on different devices and manage the software required to run the transcoding jobs. None of this work had anything to do with their goal: getting a high quality video that would look great on the devices they wanted. We built Amazon Elastic Transcoder to give our customers an easy, cost effective way to solve these problems."

More Than One-Third of XBox Users Engage With Interactive Ads

LAS VEGAS -- Interactive ads on the XBox gaming system are delivering a 37% engagement rate, according to data released this week by Microsoft. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Beet.TV's Ashley Swartz connected with Ross Honey, General Manager of XBox Entertainment and Advertising, who sheds more light on these just-released figures in an interview with Beet.TV. Microsoft launched the interactive ads, dubbled "NUads," last fall with early marketers including Toyota, Unilever, and Samsung. The ads invite user participation via polls and other forms of interaction. Based on the first wave of spots with Subway and Toyota, XBox found that 37% of viewers engaged with the ads when prompted to vote, and of those 71% voted in the polls. Also, 97% of those who voted waited to see their votes appear in the final tallies, underscoring the community nature of the XBox service. "If an advertiser puts the right question there that engages the user on a personal level, then the community wants to share that feedback and they want to see how their responses lined up," he tells us. That feedback can in turn be used by brands for new campaigns or product development. Next steps in interactive TV ads will likely come in new creative formats, Honey says in this video interview. "What we've done in games shows we can drive a whole new level of interaction, so we are just scratching the surface," he says. A documentary on the imprisoned members of Russian punk rock group Pussy Riot had its world premiere in January at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. Several members of the Russian feminist punk-rock collective Pussy Riot

The three women attracted worldwide attention last year when they were arrested and charged with hooliganism following the staging of a “punk prayer” protest against recently re-elected Russian president Vladimir Putin in Moscow’s main cathedral. Amid a storm of media attention, the ensuing trial was criticized as a show staged to discourage other dissenters, with artists such as Madonna, Paul McCartney and Sting voicing their support for the group. The women were sentenced to two years in prison in October, though Samutsevich was later freed on appeal.

Russian-born Pozdorovkin, who grew up in Moscow and New York and was living in Moscow during the trial, found himself drawn to the women and how their story was being portrayed around the world. “The story hasn’t been properly represented in the media, on both the Russian and Western sides,” he says. “It isn’t about dissent—it’s about this huge generational divide and the conflict that creates. This is about a younger generation making itself heard by any means necessary.”

A punk pastiche, the film combines footage from Russian news agencies with material captured with equipment ranging from mobile phones and handheld cameras to stabilized DSLR rigs. “There’s footage from places where cameras weren’t allowed, [recorded] using iPhones or whatever,” says Pozdorovkin, who in addition to attending Harvard grew up playing in bands and producing his own fanzines. “It’s a true punk rock media collage, which is appropriate to the film and to the subject matter.”

On February 21, 2012, several members of the group staged a performance/protest at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Pussy Riot turned the performance into a music video called “Punk Prayer—Mother of God, Chase Putin Away!”

The UK-based Lerner, who runs his Roast Beef production company from London but has been a frequent traveler to Russia, sought to present an accurate picture of the three women. “One of our goals was to show the process of the trial, but this is very much a story of these women and their families,” he says. “We wanted to find out what made these women—their upbringing, their backgrounds. Who are they? We see their images daily in the press, but it’s hard to get a sense of who they really are, so that’s what we wanted to do with this film.”

The production team shot extensive interviews with the families of the three women. To make the best use of available light inside subjects’ homes, director of photography Antony Butts (After the Apocalypse) employed a Panasonic DMC-GH2 camera outfitted with a SKIER stabilizing rig and follow focus and Olympus 14-35mm Zuiko zoom lens, which allowed him to shoot at f/2 and provided increased depth of field. Audio was captured with a Zoom recorder and a combination of shotgun and lavalier mics, and recorded onto solid-state drives.

“The setup allows mid shots, wide shots and even some close-ups, but there’s always a trade-off,” Butts admits. “I’ve come to the conclusion that, because of the zoom, the DSLR cannot fulfill the role of a documentary camera. You want to be shooting the close-ups and mid shots and wide shots without switching lenses, but unless your subjects allow you to come right up close to them, the material you get is limited.”

“Ultimately it’s a stylistic choice,” Butts continues. “Shooting DSLR gives a great image but is not without its challenges. It gives a far, far, far superior image than anything a camcorder can provide, and the results can be stunning. You will get amazing cinematography. But you will also screw up. You’ll screw up material and you will potentially screw up scenes because you have more to think about.”

“There’s no silver bullet, and it really depends on the relationship you have with your subject,” he concludes. “The only camera that gives everything is the Panasonic AG-AF100, but that’s looking a little dated now. As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you.”

With sentencing handed down in October, completing the project in time for its Sundance premiere proved to be one of the biggest challenges for the filmmaking team. With more than 200 hours of material to be transcoded into ProRes format for editing in Apple Final Cut Pro, Pozdorovkin found his apartment filled with hard drives. “What would normally take six months is happening over a period of weeks,” he says.

And with so much of the film’s dialogue in Russian, Pozdorovkin must serve as the main translator. “In a film with subtitles, the director is pretty much always the main translator,” Pozdorovkin laughs. “You’re always perfecting, trying to tighten and refine the translation as you go along.”
